In this swiftly executed sketch, left largely undeveloped, Turner pictures the Alzette valley at Luxembourg. Elements of this sketch and others (Tate D28281–D28283, D28286–D28287; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 64–65, 66a–67) were combined to form a gouache, watercolour and pen and ink drawing on blue paper of a similar date.1
