These very roughly rendered sketches, drawn with the book orientated at various angles, depict scenes from the Moselle Valley and castles and fortresses. Turner has inscribed what appears to be a note on the atmospheric effects encountered at a particular moment, writing ‘[Reflective... Light]’ near one of the sketches.
