Artist biography

Alan SORRELL b. 1904

Mural painter and illustrator. Born 11 February 1904 in London, son of a watchmaker. Studied at Southend School of Art and later worked for over two years as a commercial designer before entering the R.C.A. 1924–7; awarded scholarship to the British School at Rome 1928. Senior Assistant Instructor at the R.C.A. 1931–48. Visited Iceland 1936. War artist in the R.A.F. 1941–5. Mural paintings for Southend Central Library 1934, and ‘The Seasons’ for Warwick Oken School 1949–50; Festival of Britain mural 1951. Commissioned by the Ministry of Works to make a series of drawings of ancient monuments. Exhibited at the R.A. and the N.E.A.C. from 1931; R.W.S. 1941. Married the artist Elizabeth Tanner 1947.
