Artist biography

Grace WHEATLEY b. 1888

Painter, sculptor and lecturer. Born 26 June 1888 in London, née Wolfe, descendant of the family of General Wolfe. Studied at the Slade School 1906–8 and at the Atelier Colarossi in Paris. Married John Wheatley 1912. Member of the N.E.A.C. 1921. First one-man exhibition at the Greatorex Gallery 1933. Lecturer in Fine Art, University of Cape Town, 1925–37. Carried out ceiling and wall paintings for the Art Gallery and sculpture for the New Law Courts at Cape Town. Returned to England 1937. A.R.W.S. 1945, R.W.S. 1952, R.P. 1955.
