John PLATT b. 1886
Painter and teacher; also artist in woodcuts and stained glass. Born 19 March 1886 at Leek, Staffordshire. Studied at the R.C.A. 1905–8. Head of the Leek School of Art 1910, the Harrogate School of Art 1919, the Derby School of Art 1920, the Department of Applied Art at Edinburgh College of Art 1920, and the Leicester School of Art 1923–9. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1913 and the N.E.A.C. and the International Society from 1917; also with the Arts and Crafts Society. Published a book on Colour Woodcuts 1938. President of the Society of Graver Printers in Colour 1939–53. Official War Artist to the Ministry of Transport 1939–45.
