Mary Sargant FLORENCE 1857–1954
Painter of figure subjects, mural decorations in fresco and occasional landscapes in watercolour and pastel. Born 21 July 1857 in London, née Sargant, sister of the sculptor F. W. Sargant. Studied in Paris under L.-O. Merson and at the Slade School under Legros. Married Henry Smyth Florence, an American musician, 1888. Member of the N.E.A.C. 1911 and Society of Mural Decorators. Carried out decorations in fresco at the Old School, Oakham, Rutland, c. 1909–14, and at Bournville School near Birmingham, 1912–14. Designed her house, Lordswood, Marlow, Buckinghamshire, where she hoped to found an artists' colony and where she lived until 1940. Author of Colour Co-Ordination 1940. Died at Twickenham, Middlesex, 14 December 1954.
