Artist biography

Philip SUTTON b. 1928

Landscape and figure painter. Born 20 October 1928 at Poole, Dorset. Studied at the Slade School 1949–53. Awarded the Slade School Summer Composition Prize 1952 and a French State Scholarship. First one-man exhibition at Roland, Browse and Delbanco 1956. Member of the London Group 1956. Won a special award at the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition 1957 and Second Prize in that of 1963. Taught at the Slade School from 1955 until 1963, when he went to live temporarily in the Fiji Islands.
