The artist wrote (11 May 1953) that he painted this picture under the inspiration of lines from stanza 5 of Wordsworth's Ode: Intimations of Immortality:
Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting ... But trailing clouds of glory do we come From God, who is our home: Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
The background was painted at Beaulieu Abbey, Hampshire, in 1914.
