In 1815 Collins visited Norfolk and made sketches of the coastline and local life. In the following year he also sketched at Hastings on the south coast. These trips provided him with the material he needed to attract new patrons.
This late example was praised by the art critic John Ruskin for the truth of its atmospheric effect. Collins evokes the chill of early morning by the dramatic contrast of the pale yellow sunrise with the gloomy shadows in the clouds and foreground.
