Display caption

This print was designed as an illustration to a multi-volume Voyage around Great Britain. It shows the pier at Margate crowded with people gathered to see the steam-boats depart. The accompanying text noted how rapidly Margate had developed from a quiet fishing town to a popular spot for the less wealthy kinds of metropolitan tourist. For them, like the relatively up-market Brighton, Margate acted as the ‘lungs of London’.
