Sir William Reid Dick was of a later generation than the sculptors with whom he is here displayed, but shared in some ways their approach to the figure. He received many important commissions during his career. This piece is a study for the memorial at Port Sunlight to the industrialist and philanthropist William Hesketh Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme (1851-1925). The memorial includes a group of four full-size figures, developed from the sketch shown here. Reid Dick said that thinking of Lever, 'reflecting upon his achivements, so numerous and diverse, there emerged as the major inspirations of his life - Industry, Education, Charity and Art. These I have symbolised in the four of the bronze group'.
