The sitter was Marcel Derulle, a French landscape and theatrical painter, of Montrouge near Paris. The artist was a friend of his wife.

This is the first of two casts of this work. The Trustees gave permission for the second cast to be made from it in London in 1964, as the original plaster had been lost.
