T02358 A BAY HUNTER BY A LAKE c.1790
Oil on canvas, 22 1/2 × 32 (57.2 × 81.2)
Presented by Mr Paul Mellon KBE through the British Sporting Art Trust 1979
Prov: ...; anon. sale Sotheby's 3 April 1968 (158), bt. Arthur Ackermann & Sons Ltd. for Paul Mellon.
Lit: Egerton, 1978, p.164, no.161.
The hunter, unsaddled, is portrayed in what are probably the grounds of a gentleman's country estate; there is a lake on the left, and a glimpse of a brick wall (perhaps of a stable) on the right. A date c.1790 is suggested by comparison with other works by Garrard in the Mellon Collection.
