Henri Gaudier-Brzeska 1891–1915
T00847 Standing Female Nude, One Hand on Hip 1913
Not inscribed.
Pen and ink, 15¼ x 10 (38.5 x 25.5) mounted on card, 16¼ x 10¾ (41.5 x 27.5).
Presented by the Kettle’s Yard Collection, Cambridge 1966.
Probably one of the ‘nombreux dessins de nus, animauxà la plume’ listed by Gaudier (loc. cit.) under 1913. The posture and profile of the model bear so close a resemblance to those in the charcoal drawing reproduced as Plate 49 in Brodzky, Gaudier-Brzeska Drawings, 1946, that despite their contrasting styles they were almost certainly done on the same occasion. This would confirm Gaudier’s extraordinary versatility in successfully assimilating so wide a range of idioms in so short a career.
