The artist wrote (7 June 1967): ‘Hickbush is… near Sudbury on the Essex/Suffolk border. The picture was painted outside from the subject.
‘I started on 3rd September 1961 and gave up in September 1965. The varying light of the crops that came and went can be seen from the different lights of the edge of the fore ground.’
