This appears to have been painted from nature and is probably one of the drawings which he made in the bois de Clamart, on the south-western outskirts of Paris, near Meudon. 'I saw the bois de Clamart,' he wrote in a note quoted by Descargues, 'of which I have unforgettable memories, for it was there that I began to work with deep conviction and enthusiasm.'
