This sketch was a study for an etching published in Laporte's drawing manual Sketches of Trees. He has mainly used a soft, powdery red chalk, beginning with the tree trunks and branches. The foliage was quickly added as either rounded or zigzagged lines to differentiate between the two trees. Laporte then laid down blocks of colour for the shadows by using the side of the soft chalk. Very thin lines in the upper branches of the tree on the left were created with a chalk sharpened to a fine point.
