Mackenzie was born in Liverpool and attended Liverpool College of Art. In 1950 he moved to Cornwall where he spent the remainder of his life. Between 1951 and 1964 he taught at the Plymouth College of Art and Design. At the same time he exhibited his paintings with the Penwith Society and in group shows across the country and abroad. The artist wrote of this drawing: ‘It was part of a series (one of which I still possess) – a reclining figure/landscape idea. I made two paintings at the time – reclining landscape #8211;
