In reply to questions from the compiler about T03967-70 the artist wrote on 1 January 1988:
I never work from drawings or do I have pre-conceived ideas as to what I am going to do.
Each piece is a complete and separate piece of creation.
I compose them on the spot with materials that surround me in the studio.
The materials are found, some are given to me and sometimes are the accumulations of many years.
These pieces were done in my studio in N[ew] Y[ork] C[ity] on Spring St and were given directly to the Tate Gallery.
