Potter’s picture was one of the last works he completed before his untimely death – reputedly but doubtfully of starvation. He captured on canvas the mild boredom of a girl teaching piano to a young child whose doll is cast aside. Potter was influenced by the warm intimacy of Dutch interior scenes. He never achieved financial success, but his talent as a colourist was recognised by critics and connoisseurs around the turn of the century. A Music Lesson predates Jean Renoir’s famous treatments of the same subject.
