Procktor was born in Dublin and came to England as a child. In 1958 he enrolled at the Slade School where he was taught by William Coldstream. He travelled around Europe in the early 1960s and, with the encouragement of David Hockney, he began to produce prints. In 1996 he was
elected Royal Academician.
Procktor visited southern Africa in 1974 travelling to Johannesburg, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and the Victoria Falls. In both these prints he captures the colour and light of the African landscape.
