Together with folio 60 (D17157), this leaf was shown in a frame of four ‘Studies in Italy’ in the touring Third Loan Collection 1 and listed by Finberg among ‘Miscellaneous Black and White’ drawings under CXCV(a). Both leaves were subsequently returned to the sketchbook as folios ‘58a and b’. This change is noted by Edward Croft-Murray in a pencil annotation to a copy of Finberg in the Tate Library; he adds ‘They are actually pp.59 & 60 of the original book’. They are discoloured from exposure. The subjects of a valley between trees are somewhat different in character and style from others in the book, and are not currently identified.
