Catalogue entry

The study on which a finished watercolour (Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford)1 was based. It is inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. The trimming of the page at the right of the design was presumably to indicate the edge of the composition, though Turner has added a further group of trees at the left which he did not include in the final watercolour. The composition continues on folio 18 recto (D00097).
