Ruined buildings juxtaposed with devastation brought upon human figures
by the forces of nature is a theme found
in the England and Wales series.

From its rocky promontory Criccieth Castle overlooks Tremadog Bay in North Wales. Turner depicts a salvage operation on the beach with coastguard officers supervising the efforts of the shipwrecked men. The landscape is made to appear even more overwhelming by Turner's customary exaggeration of scale. The rock is elevated to extraordinary proportions whilst
some of the figures on the distant shore
appear microscopic.
