This is one of a group of studies associated with Turner's second visit to Italy, of which other examples can be seen in this room. They are essentially composition studies evoking the spirit of Italy and reminiscent of the ideal landscapes and seaport subjects of Claude, and are notable for their simple masses and strong contrasts of light and shade. This sketch, together with six others, was originally on a single, large piece of rolled canvas; they were not separated until earlier this century.
