Following Turner’s inscription, David Hill has confirmed in correspondence with the author Finberg’s identification of this very slight sketch.1 It shows a view towards St Gervais-les-Bains, taken from the old road from St Martin to Servoz. At this point Turner was following the Arve valley south towards Mont Blanc on the outward stage of his Alpine journey.
