Inscr. on the back ‘My Stepmother’.
Canvas, 44×34 (112×86); a further 3 (7·5) of painted canvas is turned over at the right, 1 5/8 (4) on left, 2 1/4 (5·75) at top, and 2 1/2 (6·5) at bottom.
Bequeathed by the artist 1951.

An oil study for this portrait, on board, 13 1/4×9 1/2 in., was sold at Sotheby's, 17 July 1963 (42), bt. M. Millus. It shows the subject standing full-length against a more detailed background of furniture and curtains. Her hands appear to be clasped together as she rests them on the chair back. Another portrait of the artist's stepmother (29 1/2×24 1/2 in.) belonged in 1957 to Mrs E. Denham White.
