Winifred NICHOLSON b. 1893

Landscape and flower painter, also known by her maiden name of Roberts and by her mother's surname Dacre. Born 21 December 1893 at Oxford, the granddaughter of George, 9th Earl of Carlisle, an amateur painter and friend of the Pre-Raphaelites. Studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and in Paris. First wife of Ben Nicholson, exhibiting with him at the Paterson Gallery 1923. Member of the 7 & 5 Society 1925–35 and the N.E.A.C. 1937–43.
