The sitter wears a green brocade housecoat with a purple collar and a white neckcloth. He is turned to the left inside a false oval. Among the three portraits exhibited by Beach at the Society of Artists in 1773 (no numbers) only the one described as ‘A Head. Oval’ could correspond to this in size. No other head and shoulders portraits by Beach of this date are recorded.
