The sitter is Miss Rosalind Gray (b. 1892), the artist's sister, who is herself a miniature painter; she posed in a room of their old home at Clapham Park. The artist wrote (21 September 1957) that he preferred the side light of this room to that of his studio for this subject. The portrait was painted in 1924–5.
