Technique and condition

Painted on a fine open weave canvas, on the original stretcher and a white colourman's oil priming with a Lucien LeFèbvre-Foinet, Paris, stamp on the reverse.

Painted in oil using quite thin scumbles, strongly brushmarked and directional. The canvas texture is evident in most parts but some thicker application of paint has been used to delineate the forms, such as: table legs, bread, book. Glazing has been used in the shadows and darker areas. The artist has reworked many areas such as the back and around the bread.

This painting has not been varnished and the overall effect is matte. The painting is in reasonably good condition, except it has been excessively tightened to reduce minor bulges at the edges of the canvas.

The frame was not original and was replaced by a more substantial one to provide better protection for the painting.
