Norman Stevens 1937-1988
T01453 Porch 1971
Aqua-tec on canvas, 48¾ x 48¿ (123 x 122.5).
Chantrey Purchase 1971.
Exh: Hanover Gallery, June-July 1971 (no catalogue); R.A., 1972 (1175).
The artist wrote (24 February 1972) that T01453 was painted in May 1971 and was close to two other works exhibited with it at the Hanover Gallery, ‘House’ (18 x 18 in., coll. London Borough of Camden), and ‘House with Shadows’ (36x48 in., private collection).
It has a close general relationship to the four large ‘Louvered Shutters’ paintings in the same exhibition, described by the artist as ‘believable but not accurate descriptions of shutters, with a changing sky behind. They are meticulously painted in Aqua-tec using an airbrush in their final stages to get as even and controlled a finish as possible...
‘Along with Garden, [T01453] was a deliberate attempt to loosen up after the previous paintings.’
There are three drawings on the ‘Porch’ theme. These and T01453 were based on notes and photographs taken by the artist in Colorado in 1965 and again on a subsequent visit in 1968.
