Turner's visits to Wales in the last years of the eighteenth century resulted in a series of impressive of the valleys around Snowdon, many of which were clearly sketched and coloured in the open air. This view develops a Turner had already adopted on another sheet of , so it is possible that he worked it up at a later point on his tour, creating a more considered response to the scene. The introduction of cloud and mist on the mountains perhaps suggests that Turner was actually recording these effects from nature, but his earlier study also implies their presence, so he would have been able to work them up from memory.
