Art Under Attack Anon Christ before Pilate c1400–25
In this panel discussion, artist Lucy Skaer, art historian Dr Richard Clay (University of Birmingham), and co-curator of the exhibition Art under Attack Dr Stacy Boldrick examine iconoclasm in contemporary art and its relationship to destruction. The panel revisits the idea that all acts of iconoclasm (or image breaking that deliberately makes a point) involve destruction or complete obliteration, and instead considers iconoclastic acts as acts of transformation. Speakers explore different practices of reworking and transforming materials and objects, and address how and why they take place.
Lucy Skaer
was born in Cambridge in 1975. She completed her BA at the Glasgow School of Art. From 1997 Skaer co-founded the collaborative group Henry Viii’s Wives, and worked at Transmission gallery in Glasgow, where she had her first solo show in 2000. In 2003 Skaer was shortlisted for the art prize Beck's Futures and exhibited at the first Scottish presentation at the Venice Biennale, where she also presented in 2007. Skaer’s recent solo presentations include Kunsthalle Basel (2009) for which she was nominated for the Turner Prize, Kunsthalle Wien (2012) Yale Union, Portland (2013). She has a current solo show at Tramway, Glasgow.
Richard Clay
is Senior Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Birmingham. He gained a PhD from UCL in 1999 and held a Henry Moore Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. His research focuses on Iconoclasm, especially between late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French and British Visual Culutres. He is an academic advisor for the Art under Attack: Histories of British Iconoclasm exhibition.
Stacy Boldrick
is Curator of research and interpretation at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh, and co-curator of the Art Under Attack: Histories of British Iconoclasm exhibition at Tate Britain. She is honorary fellow at the Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh and is co-author together with Richard Clay of Iconoclasm: Contested Objects, Contested Terms.
