Audio Description: 'Poor man's picture gallery': Victorian Art and Stereoscopic Photography Tate Britain

15 December 2014 at 11.00–12.30

Henry Wallis, Chatterton 1856. Tate.

This display brings twelve of Tate’s Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite works face to face with a rare collection of their three-dimensional doubles assembled by Brian May.

Led by Vyiki Turnbull 'Poor man’s picture gallery’: Victorian Art and Stereoscopic Photography is the first display in a major British art gallery devoted to early three-dimensional photography.

These ingenious but inexpensive stereograph pictures were a nineteenth century craze, circulating world-wide in tens of thousands and more.

Seats and gallery stools will be available for this talk which will take place in the gallery with trained visual describers giving a detailed descriptions of the paintings.

Sighted escorts and guide dogs are welcome.  If you have any other access needs that you would like to let us know about please contact: Anna Murray, Assistant Curator: Access on anna.murray@tate.org.uk or + 44 (0)20 7887 8888
