In conversation: Richard Deacon

Richard Deacon is one of Britain’s most prominent and influential living sculptors. This event marks a rare opportunity to hear Deacon talk about his work, in conversation with curator and writer Lewis Biggs, Director of the 2014 Folkestone Triennial, and a former director of Tate Liverpool.

Richard Deacon is a sculptor and a writer. He has exhibited widely internationally over the past 30 years. A major retrospective of his work, The Missing Part, was shown at museums in France and Germany in 2010–11. A collected edition of his writings, So, If, And, But was published in English and German at the same moment. His most recent public work, Upper Strut, was installed in Singapore in September 2011. Richard Deacon's retrospective at Tate Britain is open until April 2014.

Lewis Biggs was Director of Tate Liverpool, 1990 to 2000. With James Moores, he founded Liverpool Biennial in 1998, and was its Artistic Director and Chief Executive 2000–11.  He was a Curator of Aichi Triennale 2013 (Nagoya, Japan) and is Curator for Folkestone Triennale 2014 (UK). As International Advisor to the College of Art and Design, Shanghai University, he helps organise a UK/China Award for Critical Writing (since 2012) and the John Moores Painting Prize China (since 2010). He is the founding Chairman of the Institute for Public Art, an initiative advocating artists' involvement in place-making through the International Award for Public Art.
