Explore J.M.W Turner’s late work through this hands-on printmaking course. Experiment with drypoint, collograph, chine colle and handcolouring to create landscapes and seascapes.
With exclusive out-of-hours visits to the The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free exhibition and the permanent collection at Tate Britain, participants question ideas of the picturesque and representation in their own work.
Course outline
Session one
You will have exclusive access to The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free with the opportunity to sketch while in the exhibition. Following a print demonstration in the Clore Studio, you will take home drypoint card to prepare your ideas and sketches for Session two.
Session two
Using techniques to print in drypoint card, option to hand colour with watercolours. Participants will be encouraged to share discussions and critique within the group to think about ideas of the picturesque and their own work.
Session three
Focusing on an introduction to landscape and the picturesque you will engage in experimental drawing exercises to develop your skills. This session will introduce techniques in drypoint on metal plate. You will take home an aluminium plate to prepare your first slate for printing next week.
Session four
This fourth session will focus on making print aluminium plates. There is a further opportunity to visit The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free to investigate colour and texture.
Session five
Open studio printing – participants will be able to spend time working on their own prints, with options to apply collograph, chine colle and hand colour.
Session six
Make the final touches of hand colouring, trinning, signing and cleaning your prints. During this final session you will display the works you have produced during the course in a mini exhibition and have the opportunity to invite your friends and family to view your creations.
No technical knowledge is required and all levels of ability welcome.
Materials are provided and ticket price includes entry to the exhibition on several sessions. Please be aware this course uses oil-based inks and solvents. Led by artist J. Yuen Ling Chiu.
