This five-week course guides you through a process of meditative making. Providing a playful introduction to the concepts of healing art, these sessions help you to deepen your relationship to your creative self using ancient yogic and meditation techniques to fine tune the senses. Inspired by explorations of artworks in Tate Britain in the stillness of the galleries out of hours, we create small-scale artworks from mixed media that respond to all our five senses and beyond. Open to both beginner and advanced creative practitioners; some materials and light refreshment of Ayurvedic teas will be provided.

Led by Jagat Joti Kaur, the founding Director of the Healing Arts Team, who is passionate about being in touch with soil, seed, heart and soul within the city.

Course outline

Each session will start with yoga and meditation, followed by a mixture of practical making sessions in the studio, and discussion in the galleries.

Week 1: the course begins with an opportunity to find artworks in Tate Britain’s collection that resonate with us and hold various precious pieces in Jagat Joti Kaur’s own collection.

Weeks 2 and 3: sound, meditation and mantra will inform our handling of materials and making process. Exploring the gallery space itself, we will find shapes and textures that appeal to us and inspire the creation of small-scale sculptures from clay.

Weeks 4 and 5: To present our sculptures, we will create miniature plinths and aromatic display cushions, arranging them in the gallery. Friends and family will be invited to join us for a celebration and private view of our small-scale sculptures.
