Christopher Nevinson The Arrival exhibited 1914
In the years before 1914 there was a considerable freedom of movement and discussion in the arts across Europe. Different groups in different countries were excited by speed, technology and the new ease of transport and communications. This display of Vorticist, Futurist, Rayonnist and Simultaneist works looks at the enthusiasm of contemporary artists for the 'dynamism' of modern life. Loans from the Imperial War Museum of propellors, typewriters, telephones and machine tools highlight not only the presence of new technology, but also the parallels between art and machinery in terms of style and shape.
