Museum Bhavan: Dayanita Singh in conversation

30 September 2017 at 19.30–20.45

A celebration of books with artist Dayanita Singh in conversation with Stephanie Rosenthal

This is a unique opportunity to hear artist Dayanita Singh in conversation with chief curator at Hayward Gallery Stephanie Rosenthal. The talk is inspired by Singh’s new publication Museum Bhavan, a pocket museum housed in a unique box, published by Steidl. Following the talk Dayanita Singh is available for a book signing.

At this special event Dayanita Singh shares her passion for books, as she launches Museum Bhavan. Museum Bhavan creates a new space between publishing and the museum, where books have the same if not greater artistic value than prints hanging on a gallery wall.

When the nine mobile museums in Museum Bhavan began to find homes in formal institutions, Singh decided to find a form that would allow her museums to be simultaneously disseminated in more domestic spaces: as a result, the larger wooden museums transformed into the pocket museum. A unique handmade box that holds within it nine miniature books/exhibitions and a book of conversations, the pocket museum is waiting to be installed in your homes. Is it a book? Is it an exhibition? Is it mass produced? Is it unique? Is it a work of art? All of this and more, as Singh invites you to become the curator of her work.

Singh’s exhibitions include those at the Serpentine Gallery, Hamburger Bahnhof, the Hayward Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum für Moderne Kunst. In 2013 Singh represented Germany at the Venice Biennale. Bookmaking is central to her practice.
