This weekend workshop looks at the different ways writers might respond to moving image artworks. Over the two days participants will discuss a range of experimental approaches to writing and will have the chance to develop their own writing practices.
How might artists and writers collaborate on a text?
What kind of writing might be inspired by artists’ film, video and digital media?
The workshop is led by the writer and curator Mason Leaver-Yap, and also includes visits to the Steve McQueen exhibition at Tate Modern and a special guest talk by the artist Oreet Ashery.
Biographies
Mason Leaver-Yap
Mason Leaver-Yap works with artists to produce texts, exhibitions, and events. They have recently been working with Sharon Hayes, Sunil Gupta, Jimmy Robert, Rachel O’Reilly, Andrea Büttner, Renée Green and Free Agent Media, Ingrid Pollard, Alexis Mitchell and Sharlene Bamboat, Kat Anderson, Evan Ifekoya, Jamie Crewe, Lisa Tan, Beatrice Gibson with CAConrad and Eileen Myles, Marwa Arsanios, Yto Barrada, Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz. They live in Glasgow and Berlin.
Oreet Ashery
Oreet Ashery is a transdisciplinary visual artist who navigates established, institutional and grassroot art and social contexts. The work engages with biopolitical fiction, autoethnography, gender materiality and potential communities. Ashery’s practice manifests through distinct multiplatform projects that span moving-image, live situations, performance, assemblage and writing.
