Art and Theatre Inside Suitcases

Join young people’s theatre-maker Rachel Betts – and a pile of suitcases – to create theatre inspired by the journeys artists, art-works and visitors make to arrive at Tate Modern.
Rachel Betts and a company of Royal Holloway’s theatre-makers explore the relationship between art and theatre in this workshop for children. They imagine, discover and release stories from Tate that are carried and stored inside suitcases.
Three 60 minute drop-in workshops, offer opportunities for children and accompanying adults to take a multi-sensory journey into art-works.
How can theatre become a point of exchange between people, places and experiences? What will you find when you open the suitcases? Join us on a journey of sights, scents, textures, sounds and inventive worlds.

Heroes, Clowns and Monsters Puppet Workshop

Learn about wayang golek, a form of theatre from Indonesia using rod puppets, in this hands-on workshop with Matthew Cohen.
Explore how puppets are made, learn basic principles of animation such as breath and focus, and encounter different character-types and their voices. Devise sequences of actions and create short narratives using traditional, hand-crafted wooden puppets from West Java, Indonesia. Think about the relationship between puppets and sculpture, and question what brings an object to life.
Suitable for children aged 8-12 and their parents and carers. No previous puppetry experience required.
Matthew Cohen is Professor of International Theatre at Royal Holloway. He has lived in Indonesia in total for more than seven years and performs shadow and rod puppetry internationally under the company banner of Kanda Buwana.
