Through Our Lens was an exhibition created by Tiber Young Producers bringing together video, photography, and collage to reflect on their community, their histories and their visions for the future.

The project began as a journey into local archives and evolved into an exhibition which explored lived experiences, community spirit and a generation finding its voice. Through food, photography, and rich cross-generational conversations, the group uncovered not just stories of the past but a powerful sense of the present.

The group designed and created all parts of this exhibition with the support of Producer and Photographer Emma Case and Tate Liverpool Curator of Learning Stef Bradley.

Tiber Young Producers are a group of creatives aged 15-20 formed through the support of Tiber and working in partnership with Tate Liverpool. Tiber's vision is to build world class facilities, raising aspirations, encouraging and supporting young people in achieving their goals and getting the best from life by being positive role models in and around the L8 area. The young people are offered training opportunities, involvement in entrepreneurial projects, enterprise and leadership programs, and work closely with local residents, businesses, volunteers and community organisations to fulfil theirs and Tiber’s vision.

In 2024, we worked with the Tiber Young Producers to create an exhibition at the Metquarter called The Threads That Bind Us.

The Tiber Young Producers included:

Jasmin Kosmos, Kaidyn-Lee Morris-Browne, Sha-Rae Riley, N’Kias Coker, Amani Benjamin-Abbey, Cecilia Deakin, Amira Taher, Elsie Kinzambi, Kelyce Morris-Browne and Daisy Austin

With contributions from Rihanna Alkunshalie and Idris Baten.

“This project has allowed our voices as young people to flourish and allowed us to turn the adversities faced by the young people of Toxteth into a positive, creative space. It’s allowed us to show our vulnerability and use it for the better.” - Jasmin Kosmos, Tiber Young Producer

"Working with Tiber has shown me creativity can unite a diverse community, turning individual stories into a shared story." - Daisymay Austin, Tiber Young Producer

Exploring history and culture through photography

Tiber Young Producers researched the history, culture and stories of different generations in Toxteth. They took inspiration from the work of photographer Leroy Cooper, as well as the archives of Michelle Peterkin Walker (Yore Lens on L8, Liverpool Black Archive Hub). This helped them approach their own street photography, exploring the work of artists who have documented the area before them and showing today’s Toxteth from their generation’s perspective.

The group all received cameras to document their experiences and worked closely with socially-engaged photographer Emma Case to find their own style and develop their skills. They gathered for regular photography walks to explore Toxteth through their lens.

Alongside this, Tiber Young Producers created an animated photomontage in collaboration with artist Mark Murphy. This pieced together their own photography and findings from the project into a reflection on the past, present and future of L8.

The Flavours that Bind Us

Celebrating connection, culture and history through food has been a central theme of Through Our Lens.

As part of their research, Tiber Young Producers spent time with Jerome Griffin, Liverpool’s one and only Scouse Ghetto Gourmet, exploring culture, histories and community through the flavours of Toxteth. They collaborated with The Yemeni Kitchen, Raggas Caribbean Cafe, Girmaale’s Kitchen, Sham Eastern Sweets and Granby Supermarket (Danny’s Continental Store).

Following their food walk, the group developed their own culinary skills by undertaking a cooking class with chef Kazem Ashourzadeh (Mr Boy Food), hosted in the professional kitchens of City of Liverpool College.

Tiber Young Producers hosted their ‘Documenting Our Toxteth Lunch Club’, inviting artists, leaders and changemakers of all ages within their community to share photographs and memories. Illustrator Chris Rodenhurst and Tiber Young Producer Cecilia Deakin captured this special event through illustration, shown alongside the group’s photography.

The launch of Tiber Young Producers: Through Our Lens

The preview of Tiber Young Producers: Through Our Lens took place at Tiber’s new centre on Lodge Lane on 25 September 2025. It was attended by staff, collaborators, family and supporters from the L8 area.

"Through Tiber we have turned our diversity into a strength and our exhibition showcases what young people are capable of and what we can build together." - Amira Taher, Tiber Young Producer

The exhibition was open to the public at the Tiber Centre from 26 September – 1 October 2025.
