Lit: Rawlinson II 1913, no.798; Herrmann 1990, p.162
Rawlinson listed this print under ‘Single Sundry Mezzotints’, and suggested a date of c.1830. However, Wilton has catalogued the preliminary watercolour (Wilton 1979, no.509, private collection, UK; repr. E. Shanes, Turner's Rivers, Harbours and Coasts, 1981, no.116) amongst those possibly intended for the series Marine Views (see under T04820); and more recently Herrmann has stated categorically that the print was indeed intended for the series, presumably being abandoned at the time of the quarrel between Turner and Cooke (Herrmann 1990, p.162; in which case the print would be most likely to date from c. 1826–7 rather than 1830).
There is a contemporary, though rather damaged, impression of ‘Folkestone’ in the British Museum (1871-12-9-592), formerly in the possession of the collector Benjamin Godfrey Windus. The British Museum also has an impression, like the one catalogued here, printed by the Fine Art Society in 1879, although in black ink rather then brown (1874-12-12-431). Both these later impressions show corrosion marks at the lower right which indicates that the original plate was of steel-a development pioneered by Lupton in the early 1820s (see under T04790-T04819).
