Inscr. ‘Edward Bawden 1954’ b.r. and on back, ‘Lt. Saling Church, Essex 1954.’
Pen and ink and watercolour, 17 3/4×22 1/2 (45×57).
Chantrey Purchase from the artist 1955.
Exh: R.A., 1955 (727).
‘Little Saling church is mainly a 14th-century structure according to Pevsner, & the wall I chose to paint would seem to be the only external wall untouched by restoration, though obviously patched from time to time. The drawing was done in late March, in watercolour on the basis of an ink drawing. It was a second attempt - the first drawing has now been fortunately destroyed’ (letter from the artist, 26 October 1956).
