In 1976 Beuys ran for the Bundestag (Parliamentary) elections as a candidate for the non-aligned Aktionsgemeinschaft Unabhängiger Deutscher, or AUD (Action Association of Independent Germans). The AUD campaigned for the freedom of cultural and educational institutions, and for better representation of women in the Parliament.
