Diana was the daughter of David Bomberg by his second wife Lilian, and was born in Ronda, Spain, in May 1935. This portrait study was painted directly, without preliminary drawing, in London. Another, smaller horizontal portrait of Diana (11 1/4 × 15in.) painted at the same time is in a private collection, and is signed and dated 1937. Later portraits of her are in the collection of Mrs D. Davies-Rees (1942) and the Arts Council (1943).
