Technique and condition
The artist selected linen canvas for this version in the Cowboy series. As with the others, the figure is depicted with a thinner paint layer that the background. A wider brush has been used to produce a flatter surface. By contrast, a less wide brush has produced the insistent brush marking in the rest of the painting. The darkest paint is the most thickly applied. Its medium rich and glossy appearance impinge on the back of the canvas where its weight pulls the canvas out of plane. Medium from the slow drying black paint has been absorbed through to the back. A white priming has also been applied to the back of the canvas which excess oil from the dark areas has penetrated through.
