Brayovitch was born in Montenegro, and studied at the High Academy of Sculpture in Vienna. He emigrated to Britain after the First World War, and settled in Hampstead. Many of his works were bronze portrait busts, executed in a realistic style. The origin and history of Red Indian are shrouded in mystery. The work was discovered in the Tate stores, without any accompanying documentation.
Janko Brayovitch was born in Montenegro in 1889 and died in Britain in 1946.
