E. David states (letter of 7 October 1958) that there are several later variants of this self-portrait, which is the first of its type. Two of 1956 follow the pose closely: in one (now in a US private collection) the artist is in a dark shirt against a light background, and in the other (coll. Pierre Bergé) he has a pale blue shirt against a dark background. The latter is reproduced in J. Giono, Bernard Buffet
(Paris 1956), pl.18. In a self-portrait of 1955 (coll. Anthony Denney, London), the artist is shown painting with his left hand, his right arm concealed by the canvas, while in two further portraits of the same year (colls. the artist and E. David) he paints with his left hand and holds his right arm across the body.
